Private District Six & Langa township tour Cape Town

District Six memory and Langa community history in one privately coordinated Cape Town journey.

District Six was declared a white group area in 1966 under apartheid, and the District Six Museum records that an estimated 60,000 people were forcibly uprooted and relocated to the Cape Flats. When open, booked and confirmed, the Museum visit adds living-memory and restitution context while remaining an independently operated public heritage experience.

Langa was established in 1927 and is recognised by the City of Cape Town as Cape Town’s oldest formally laid-out township and the first township built in Cape Town for Black South Africans. Along the Shaws provides the private ground journey with Donovan Shaw or another approved registered guide, as confirmed before departure; exact local hosts, community stops, cultural venues, tastings, meals and faith-community visits remain date-specific and are never assumed.

Your journey

Experience overview

Explore two places central to understanding Cape Town’s 20th-century history on a privately coordinated journey linking District Six and Langa.

District Six was declared a white group area in 1966 under apartheid. The District Six Museum records that an estimated 60,000 people were forcibly uprooted and relocated to the Cape Flats. When the Museum is open, available and included in your written confirmation, the visit provides important context through memory, exhibition and restitution work. The Museum is independently operated and controls its own bookings, tickets, visitor programme and access.

Langa was established in 1927 and is recognised by the City of Cape Town as Cape Town’s oldest formally laid-out township and the first township built in Cape Town for Black South Africans. The Langa portion is approached as a lived neighbourhood with histories of segregation, pass-law control, resistance, jazz, arts, enterprise and community life — never as a spectacle.

Along the Shaws provides the private ground journey with Donovan Shaw or another approved registered guide, as confirmed before departure. Exact Langa community stops, local guide or host participation, cultural venues, food experiences, Umqombothi tasting, restaurant bookings and any faith-community visit depend on local operating arrangements and are included only when specifically confirmed in writing for your date.

“I can't thank Donovan enough for making our trip to Cape Town a wonderful learning experience and so much fun. He brought the energy and kept our group smiling. We were a large group of nearly 35 people. He kept us moving and on time, knew how to anticipate traffic and group needs, knew all the great spots to see, and was super flexible. Donovan knows this city and it's history well. I loved our chats, and left Cape Town feeling like I now know an amazing guide to call up when I return and also a friend. He's the man!”
