False Bay Marine Big 5 safari from Cape Town
“Marine Big 5” is a regional wildlife concept—not one fixed Simon’s Town boat product and never a five-sighting guarantee.
Along the Shaws coordinates the shared Cape Town ground journey, pickup route, supplier communication and guest itinerary. The appointed licensed marine operator controls the vessel, skipper and crew, safety briefing, route, operating duration and final go-or-no-go decision in False Bay.
Depending on the confirmed supplier and season, the marine experience may be a whale-and-dolphin trip, Seal Island eco-cruise, Cape Point eco-cruise, broader surface wildlife safari or another approved marine activity. Possible wildlife can include whales, dolphins, Cape fur seals, sharks, African penguins and seabirds, but no species, number of animals or behaviour is guaranteed.
Supplier-Confirmed Marine Product
The appointed operator, vessel, marina, route, duration, wildlife focus and included services are confirmed before payment rather than assumed from the “Marine Big 5” label.
Usually an Extended Half Day
The base Simon’s Town marine journey is normally around 5–7 hours including Cape Town transport. A longer day applies only when the supplier schedule or a separately confirmed extension requires it.
Want a Dedicated Whale-Watching Day?
Compare the Hermanus whale-watching journey when seasonal whale watching is the main purpose rather than a broader False Bay marine experience.
Compare Gansbaai Shark Cage Diving
Choose the Gansbaai page when the shark-cage activity itself is the priority and the longer Overberg road journey suits your schedule.
Need Marine Activity Transport Only?
Use the attraction and activity transfer service when the marine booking is already arranged and you only need private ground transport to the confirmed supplier.
Need a Peninsula Combination?
Use the custom private Cape Town tour when the marine activity needs to be combined with other priorities and the route requires realistic timing checks.
Your journey
Experience overview
Travel from Cape Town to Simon’s Town for a supplier-operated False Bay marine wildlife experience coordinated around the exact licensed operator, vessel, route and seasonal wildlife focus confirmed for your date.
The phrase “Marine Big 5” is a regional Western Cape wildlife term commonly used for whales, dolphins, Cape fur seals, sharks and African penguins. It is not one standardised Simon’s Town boat product and it is never a promise that all five will appear on one departure.
Current False Bay marine products vary materially by operator and season. Depending on the confirmed supplier, the marine experience may be a whale-and-dolphin trip, Seal Island eco-cruise, Cape Point eco-cruise, broader surface wildlife safari or another approved marine activity. Shark-cage diving is a separate specialist product and is not included unless it is expressly named in the accepted quotation.
Along the Shaws coordinates the shared Cape Town pickup route, ground journey, supplier communication and guest itinerary. The marine activity itself is operated entirely by the appointed licensed marine operator, whose skipper and crew control the vessel, safety briefing, route, operating duration and final go-or-no-go decision.
A typical journey begins with shared collection from approved Cape Town areas followed by the transfer to the confirmed Simon’s Town marina or harbour. Guests complete supplier check-in and the required safety briefing before boarding the confirmed vessel.
The marine route then follows the product actually booked. Wildlife interpretation and the species focus depend on the operator, season and current conditions. Possible encounters in the wider False Bay environment may include dolphins, Cape fur seals, seabirds, African penguins, seasonal whales and sharks, but no species, number of animals or behaviour is guaranteed.
After returning to harbour, the shared ground journey returns to Cape Town. Time for refreshments, lunch, Simon’s Town sightseeing or a compatible Peninsula extension is included only when the supplier schedule and accepted quotation expressly allow it.
The base Simon’s Town marine journey is normally planned as an extended half day rather than automatically as an 8–10 hour full day. The exact total duration depends on the chosen vessel experience, reporting time, sea conditions, traffic, pickup route and any separately confirmed extension.
Wildlife absence is not automatically grounds for a refund. Any rescheduling, credit, repeat-trip policy or refund follows the appointed operator’s written terms together with the accepted Along the Shaws Booking Terms.
This journey is coordinated by Donovan and delivered with Donovan or another approved driver-guide for the ground transport, as confirmed before departure. The vessel experience remains supplier-operated throughout.
Ideal for
Wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, couples, families whose children meet the operator’s requirements, solo travellers requesting a shared seat and visitors wanting a coordinated False Bay experience without arranging separate transport and suppliers.
Typical itinerary
Subject to availability, weather, supplier arrangements and guest preferences.
Operator, vessel, weather and product confirmation. Donovan verifies the licensed supplier, reporting time, pickup route, child or mobility requirements and the exact marine experience included in the quotation.
Shared collection from approved Cape Town accommodation or the confirmed meeting point. The exact pickup time follows the supplier reporting time and may be in the morning or later depending on the booked marine product.
Travel to the confirmed marina or harbour with sufficient time for traffic, passenger registration and boarding requirements.
Report to the appointed marine operator, complete required forms and receive the operator’s safety, equipment and sea-condition briefing.
Board the supplier-operated vessel for the exact False Bay product named in the accepted quotation. The route, vessel duration, commentary and wildlife focus depend on the operator, season and current conditions.
Search responsibly for naturally occurring marine life. Possible encounters can include whales, dolphins, Cape fur seals, sharks, African penguins and seabirds, but no species, number of animals or behaviour is guaranteed.
Disembark at the confirmed Simon’s Town marina or harbour. Refreshments, lunch, sightseeing or a Peninsula extension are included only when expressly confirmed around the supplier schedule.
Shared return transfer and drop-offs. Final timing depends on the vessel return, sea conditions, traffic, pickup route and any separately confirmed extension.

Fee information
Entrance fees: The marine operator fee, harbour charges, conservation contributions, equipment and other supplier costs are included only when expressly listed. A separate Boulders Penguin Colony visit is not part of the marine safari unless specifically added and confirmed; Boulders is a SANParks pay point with controlled boardwalk access.
Meals: Meals and drinks are not automatically included. Time for a harbour, Simon’s Town or return-route refreshment stop depends on the operator’s reporting and return times. Any included refreshments, lunch or restaurant reservation must appear in the accepted quotation.
Important information
Weather-dependent — Donovan will advise on adjustments.
What to wear: Wear warm layered clothing, a windproof and water-resistant outer layer, closed non-slip shoes and sun protection. Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, a securely fitted hat, personal medication, valid identification and a small waterproof bag for valuables. Follow the operator’s final equipment instructions.
Weather alternative: The marine operator makes the final safety decision based on wind, swell, visibility, sea state and harbour conditions. If the vessel cannot depart, Along the Shaws will coordinate the supplier’s rescheduling, credit or refund process and may offer a Simon’s Town, Cape Peninsula or other agreed alternative. Supplier refunds and already-incurred transport costs may be handled separately.
Dietary: Dietary requirements and allergies must be disclosed before any operator refreshment or restaurant arrangement is confirmed. Vessel catering is supplier-specific, limited and cannot be assumed to be allergen-free.
Booking notice: At least 72 hours is recommended, and earlier booking is advisable during peak travel periods or for families, accessibility requirements and limited-capacity departures. A date request does not reserve a vessel seat until the operator confirms availability.
Cancellation: The accepted Along the Shaws Booking Terms apply together with the appointed marine operator’s weather, cancellation, rescheduling, no-show and refund rules. Supplier deposits or tickets may become non-refundable after confirmation. Missed pickups or late arrival may result in a missed departure. Wildlife absence is not automatically grounds for a refund unless the operator provides a written sighting policy.
